[D] Texas Canyon Preserve/Amerind Museum
About this event
Rating: D. Pace: Moderate. [561, 7:30 AM, $18 + $15] This is a newly created trail system on private land adjacent to the Amerind Museum in Dragoon, AZ. Trails wind through grasslands in between the rocks and natural granite passages while keeping close to interesting features like a pock-marked tafoni rock and a natural sculpture known as Whale Rock. The stone pillars, balanced rocks, slabs, grottos, spires and fractured joints within the trail system are the result of millions of years of geological activity and weathering of quartz monzonite (aka granite) that crystalized underground. As the land surface slowly eroded, the harder granite intrusion was exposed to the elements that would shape them into the bizarre forms seen today. We will have a picnic lunch on the grounds of the Museum before going in. Access to the day-use trail system is included with museum entrance fees ($15 for seniors). The Amerind Museum is a sort of hybrid museum, art gallery and research facility dedicated to archaeology, Indigenous cultures and Western art. It’s been around since 1937. Hike 3.5 mi, trailhead elevation 4760 ft, accumulated gain 250 ft, RTD 180 mi.
